My husband likes to go camping and although I'm not quite as into camping as he is, we do want to take family camping trips when we have the chance. We haven't been able to take a family camping trip yet as we haven't figured out the logistics of camping with a baby and an autistic tween but we are hoping to go sometime soon after the weather cools down again. So in preparation for our impending family camping trip, we are testing out as much camping gear as we can. One of the goals we have is to find the right gear to help Zach handle camping successfully. Zach has sensory issues and that can make traveling outside of his comfort zone very difficult. So what we've tested here is an inflatable camping mat and a sleeping bag. We'll go over each item seperately.
First, we'll talk about the camping mat. It is inflatable and has a built in pump to inflate it with. It is really, really slow to inflate BUT it is easy to do, all you have to do is step on the pump area repeatedly until the mat is fully inflated. It's pretty long but not very wide, so it wouldn't work for anyone who moves around much in their sleep. Basically, not feasible for Zach to use unless we got a few and laid them all side by side. That might work. Anyway, the mat is quite comfortable and both kids really enjoy bouncing on it. It's also really quick and easy to deflate and pack up after you are done with it. All in all, it is good for people who don't move much when they sleep.
Now for the sleeping bag. It is a thin, light sleeping bag for soring, summer, or autmun use. It is not suitable for winter, but since most sane people don't go camping in the winter that's okay! This sleeping bag rolls up pretty small with ease. Many sleeping bags are tough if not impossible to roll bag up to the size they were when first unpacked, but with this sleeping bag it's easy to do. It rolls up easy and fits back into the bag easily as well. The sleeping bag came with a small sleeping mask as well, which we won't be using as we have many other sleeping masks already. This sleeping bag cinches down at the top, which makes it a great sleeping bag for Zach. Zach loves being in enclosed spaces so a sleeping bag that cinches down to give him his own private little hiding spot is his favorite thing. This sleeping back would also work well for hubby or me, though it is not big enough for two people to fit in together, so no snuggle time. All in all, it is a good sleeping bag.
